RETAIL / Kumamoto, 2010

The façade is girded with a nuanced mosaic that becomes a natural part of this landscape. For this shop, which gently welcomes customers into the store, the most important part of the concept lies in its floor plan by which customers can see the next part of the store in front of them but cannot see the next area after that. Customers are able to follow this plan around the store, with new sections coming into view and the areas they have been to disappearing behind them. In deciding on this mazelike floor plan, numerous simulations were made to test the visibility-to-blind-spot balance that is required for proper space management. The floor plan brings to life the hospitality BEAMS offers its customers and responds to the client's request for "a space where customers can take their time and enjoy shopping in a relaxed atmosphere".
